A vase inspired by Rubin’s vase. At first glance, it is just an array of random shapes, but by switching the point of view, the outline of the vase emerges.
We define something with mass placed in a flat space as “figure”, the background around it as “ground”, and categorize the target by differentiation of them. In the moment of perceiving an object, a huge amount of information is collated in the brain, and an optimal solution based on individual subjectivity is given. When the relationship between this figure and the ground is reversed, the land that was not visible until then appears on consciousness and our cognition is updated.
“When two fields have a common border, and one is seen as figure and the other as ground, the immediate perceptual experience is characterized by a shaping effect which emerges from the common border of the fields and which operates only on one field or operates more strongly on one than on the other”
Edgar Rubin advocated this logic in his book “Synsoplevede Figurer”. This is an easy-to-understand illustration of the natural paths when we perceive a substance, using pictures of two pots. FOG is trying to re-present how to catch the form of things by replacing this Rubin’s vase with a product.
